How to Tell If Leather Is Real or Fake: 5 Tests You Can Do at Home

You are about to spend good money on a leather wallet, bag, or purse. The label says
‘genuine leather.’ The price looks right. But how do you actually know if it is real?

The Indian and global market is full of PU (polyurethane) leather, bonded leather, and
synthetic materials that look convincing \u2014 at first. Within 6-12 months, they peel, crack,
and fall apart. Real leather does the opposite: it gets richer, stronger, and more beautiful
with every year of use.

How to Tell If Leather Is Real or Fake Here are 5 tests you can do yourself \u2014 at home, in a shop, or before you click ‘buy.’

TEST 1: THE WATER TEST
Place a small drop of water on the surface of the leather.
\u2014 Genuine leather: absorbs the water drop within 10-30 seconds. The surface darkens
\u00a0\u00a0slightly, then returns to normal as it dries.
\u2014 Fake leather (PU\/synthetic): the water drop sits on the surface and rolls off. No absorption.

Why it works: Real leather is a natural material with pores that absorb liquid. Synthetic
leather is a plastic coating \u2014 it repels water.

TEST 2: THE TOUCH AND FEEL TEST
Run your fingers across the surface.
\u2014 Genuine leather: feels warm to the touch. Has natural, irregular texture \u2014 no two areas
\u00a0\u00a0feel identical. Slightly soft and pliable.
\u2014 Fake leather: feels cool or plastic-like. Has a perfectly uniform, repeating texture.
\u00a0\u00a0May feel stiff or have a slight chemical surface.

TEST 3: THE SMELL TEST
Hold the item close and breathe in.
\u2014 Genuine leather: has a warm, distinctive, earthy scent. Organic and slightly sweet.
\u00a0\u00a0This smell is very difficult to fake and impossible to replicate chemically.
\u2014 Fake leather: smells of plastic, chemicals, or nothing at all.

TEST 4: THE EDGE TEST
Look at the edges of the item \u2014 the side of a wallet, the strap of a bag.
\u2014 Genuine leather: edges look slightly rough or fibrous. The natural fibre structure
\u00a0\u00a0is visible. May be burnished or painted but shows texture underneath.
\u2014 Fake leather: edges are perfectly smooth and uniform \u2014 often showing a fabric
\u00a0\u00a0backing on the underside. May peel at the edge.

TEST 5: THE BEND TEST
Bend the leather gently and release.
\u2014 Genuine leather: lightens slightly where bent (this is called creasing), then relaxes
\u00a0\u00a0back. The crease tells the story of the leather’s life.
\u2014 Fake leather: may crease with white stress marks that do not recover, or crack.

The label ‘genuine leather’ is one of the most misunderstood terms in the industry.
In fact, ‘genuine leather’ is one of the LOWEST grades of real leather \u2014 it is made
from the leftover layers after the premium top-grain and full-grain have been removed.
It is real leather, but it is the weakest, least durable grade.
